Hydrogen N5.0 – Safety and Identification
Safe Use Guidelines
Before using Hydrogen N5.0 in any new process or experiment:
- Carry out a material compatibility and safety study.
- Ensure adequate air ventilation.
- Comply with all national and local regulations.
- Check that equipment is properly earthed.
Note: In SDS headers, decimal signs follow international standards. For example:
- 2,000 = two (to three decimal places), not two thousand.
- 1.000 = one thousand, not one (to three decimal places).
National Regulations
Hydrogen N5.0 use is covered by:
- Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR 2002 No. 2776)
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999 No. 3242)
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (2005 No. 1541)
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH, 2002 No. 2677)
- Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER, 1998 No. 2306)
- Personal Protective Equipment Regulations (1992 No. 2966)
- Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations (COMAH, 2015 No. 483)
- Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR, 2000 No. 128)
Furthermore, only products that comply with food regulations (EC No. 1333/2008 and EU No. 231/2012) and are labelled accordingly may be used as food additives.
Gas Grades – Purity Levels
Pure gases are classified by grade:
| Grade | Minimum Purity | Total Impurities |
|---|---|---|
| N2.0 | 99% | 1% |
| N3.0 | 99.9% | 1000 ppm |
| N4.0 | 99.99% | 100 vpm |
| N5.0 | 99.999% | 10 vpm |
| N6.0 | 99.9999% | 1 vpm |
| N7.0 | 99.99999% | 100 vpb |
👉 Example: N4.6 helium = 99.996% purity.
Transport Precautions
- Avoid vehicles where the load space is not separated from the driver’s compartment.
- Ensure the driver knows the hazards and emergency procedures.
- Secure containers firmly before transport.
- Close valves and check for leaks.
- Keep valve guards or caps in place.
- Maintain adequate ventilation during transport.
